"The Awakening of Angel DeLuna" moves to New York

From The Dairy to New York: The Awakening of Angel DeLuna
is part of the New York Musical Theatre Festival.

Boulder -- Set in a Depression-era circus, The Awakening of Angel DeLuna is, first and foremost, a love story. It is also a comedy, a slice-of-life historical piece, and a rousing, operatic musical that had its beginning at The Dairy Center for the Arts in Boulder.  It’s now a popular attraction in New York and part of the New York Musical Theatre Festival.

Judylynn Schmidt, who wrote the book and co-wrote the lyrics, proved to be a bit of a prophet in a 2011 interview when she described the show’s Boulder opening and future:  "My guess is this is just the first incarnation of a very long running show -- musicals go through many layers of development before they hit the big stage - but this is a very important first step. We're lucky to begin here in the Boulder area - at such a beautiful facility as The Dairy Center for the Arts. We did much of our initial work in New York City for our off Broadway Reading - and our goal is to bring the musical to Broadway! We have a team of people focused on helping to make that dream a reality - and we believe that our miracle is waiting for us."

"The Awakening of Angel DeLuna" just concluded a run at the Pershing Square Signature Theater on New York’s 42nd Street.  This Broadway-style musical is set in a Depression-era circus and is the story of  Ollie letting the love of his life slip through his fingers and regretting it ever since.  It has been described as “A spectacle with live trapeze acts that will remind you why the human spirit is undefeatable and love is worth every risk.”

Bill Obermeier, Executive Director of The Dairy Center for the Arts, said, “The Awakening is one more example of the arts talent we enjoy here in Boulder. From major Broadway musicals to international art installations to award-winning documentaries, Boulder artists continue to entertain and inspire the world. The Dairy plays a critical role in supporting and enabling the success of many local artists.”
